Magnetism is an invisible and influential force. Magnetic fields distort a metallic liquid into spectacular shapes that visualise magnetism in three dimensions.
This film was submitted to the SCINEMA 2021 International Science Film Festival and was selected to feature in our Australian, Experimental and School categories. It also achieved the Special Jury Award at the festival. The filmmaker has kindly allowed us to continue to show the film beyond the festival. Film Description
Magnetism is an invisible and influential force. Magnetic fields distort a metallic liquid into spectacular shapes that visualise magnetism in three dimensions.
Lesson Inspiration
Explore the attractive and repulsive ability of ferrofluids using electromagnets. The strength and direction of the magnetic field is varied to manipulate the ferrofluid, allowing the field to be visualised in three dimensions.
Useful when:
This film makes a nice introduction to Unit 3 of senior Physics: Gravity and electromagnetism and it visualises magnetic fields.
